Phân biệt “A THOUSAND, THOUSAND & THOUSANDS”(8 million or 8 millions?)

Chú ý là tất cả áp dụng cho THOUSAND thì sẽ áp dụng cho HUNDRED, MILLION và BILLION nhé
Cách dễ nhớ cho các từ này về cách dùng là:
- Nếu đứng một mình SẼ CÓ S (thousands of people)
- Nếu đứng KHÔNG một mình sẽ KHÔNG CÓ S (two hundred, two hundred people)

I. Cách dùng THOUSAND

1. Số đếm + thousand

1.1. Số đếm + thousand

Lưu ý:

Khi trước “thousand” là một con số cụ thể, danh từ này có vai trò của một loại đơn vị đếm chứ không phải số lượng không được thêm hậu tố “s” vào từ (để nói con số chính xác định lượng được)

IPEN ENGLISH lưu ý:

Kể cả Số đếm + thousand + noun thì THOUSAND ở đây vẫn để ở số ít chứ không thêm s vì nó vẫn là số đếm (Khi có số liệu cụ thể đứng trước các từ hundred, thousand hay million thì mình thêm “s” vào những từ cars, people, animals… Còn thêm “s” vào từ million là không chính xác)

There were approximately four thousand foreigners visiting Vietnam.(IPEN ENGLISH giải thích: Có khoảng bốn nghìn người nước ngoài đến thăm Việt Nam)
Your essay should be no more than two thousand words long.

A thousand people took part in the region’s biggest-ever cycle race.
Our computer indexes several thousand new records every second.

2. Thousand + noun

CÓ THỂ NHỚ ĐƠN GIẢN LÀ TRỪ KHI ĐANG CHỈ SỐ ĐẾM (10 THOUSAND) THÌ NẾU THOUSAND ĐỨNG TRƯỚC 1 NOUN THÌ NÓ SẼ ĐÓNG VAI TRÒ NHƯ 1 ADJ THÌ SẼ KHÔNG BAO GIỜ CÓ S

They had driven over a/one thousand miles.
Your essay should be no more than two thousand words long.
Twelve thousand years ago, our ancestors were primitive savages living in caves.

A thousand-dollar ring

3. A THOUSAND

I have a thousand things to do before we go away. (IPEN ENGLISH giải thích: 1000 việc)

II. Cách dùng THOUSANDS

Thousands of sth (hàng ngàn sth)

IPEN ENGLISH lưu ý:

Từ này có thể dịch là “‘rất nhiều người ‘, hoặc ‘hàng nghìn người’, một con số ước lượng nên “thousands” chỉ dùng cho trường hợp ước lượng, không có số đếm cụ thể trước đó.
“Millions of people” mang nghĩa hàng triệu người, sẽ thêm “s” chữ millions, lưu ý không được thêm con số cụ thể phía trước trong cách dùng này

Xét ví dụ:

He won thousands of dollars in the lottery(giải thích: Anh ta thắng xổ số hàng nghìn USD)
Thousands of people died during the World War II.(giải thích: Hàng nghìn người đã chết trong Thế chiến II )
Thousands of people have visited Vietnam last year.(giải thích: Hàng ngàn người đã đến thăm Việt Nam năm ngoái.)
There were thousands of people there.(giải thích: Có hàng ngàn người ở đó.)
Thousands of people have visited Vietnam last year. There were thousands/millions of people there.
The damage will cost thousands of dollars to repair.
His latest work is expected to sell in the thousands.
Accommodation needs to be found for thousands of homeless families.
Thousands of jobs rely on this industry.
They spent thousands of dollars trying to fix the problem.
